Arthur Reed was born in Isleham on 7th November 1895 (Newmarket Q4-1895 3B:512) and baptised in Isleham on 26th January 1896, son of Frederick and Mary REED
( née GOODCHILD).
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at West Street, Isleham, with his father Frederick REED [39] a market gardener/shoemaker; his mother Mary [39], bread baker; sisters Ellen [14], Laura [13], Elizabeth [9], Esther [7] and Mary [4] and brothers Robert[11] and George F. [8 months]. The whole family were born in Isleham. 1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at Field Farm, Isleham, with his parents and brothers Robert, George and Richard [7]. Enlisted in Newmarket. His service records have not been found. From Lt Col Murphy's "History of the Suffolk Regiment" it appears that the 1st Suffolks were in the Ypres Salient. Conditions were not good, trenches and dug-outs half filled with water, enemy artillery and aircraft constantly busy. On the 4th the battalion was bombarded by trench mortars. 12 men were killed, not one has a known grave, all are named on the Menin Gate. |
